Comms team generalist (Writer/Proofreader/Researcher)

Note: Volunteers may choose to specialize in one area. But the hope is that volunteers under this JD can perform any/all of the writer/proofreader/researcher duties as required.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for curating and developing fresh, relevant, and informative content by refining ideas, cultivating sources, reports, and writing articles.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects at once.
  • Responsible for reviewing, revising, and editing materials for spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, usage, consistency, and brand voice written by members of the broader team.
  • Oversee and edit the structure of writing as well as research the subject matter for accuracy.
  • Verify the accuracy of all referenced facts (e.g., dates, pages, values) and double-check cross-referenced materials (e.g., websites, newspapers) if any. 
  • Maintain source and reference logs as evidence of the work and assist with budget and time schedules, as needed.
  • Brainstorm new stories, series, concepts, themes, and formats with internal teams as needed.
  • Conducting desktop research, and using books, journal articles, newspaper sources, questionnaires, surveys, polls, and interviews to gather data.
  • Work as part of a larger team, attend team meetings, provide constructive editorial input, and communicate with team members to effectuate consistent, accurate, and high-quality work product.
  • Following a strict code of ethics and protecting any confidential information at all times.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Media or related field
  • Demonstrated excellence in content creation or editing, including online publishing
  • Efficient in writing, editing, and computer proficiency
  • Quick reader and detail-oriented with a knack of catching the most minute errors along with those most glaring
  • Resourcefulness during crosschecking and verifying data, to track down the appropriate resources and address questions or issues in the article that might require additional research. Knowing where to find the accurate answers through thorough research.
  • Flexibility and persistence to manage as well as prioritize various projects at once
